How to Store Saffron Properly

Saffron may be used in small quantities, which means a pack can remain in your kitchen for quite some time. How it is stored matters if you want to protect its characteristic colour, aroma and flavour.

Like many dried spices, saffron is affected by its environment. Light, moisture, heat and repeated exposure to air can all work against good storage conditions.

Fortunately, storing saffron properly is straightforward. A suitable container and the right place in your kitchen can help protect the threads between uses.

Keep Saffron Away from Light

Store saffron in a dark place such as a cupboard or pantry rather than leaving it exposed to direct sunlight. An opaque container can provide additional protection from light.

If your saffron comes in clear packaging, keeping that packaging inside a closed cupboard is a simple way to reduce unnecessary light exposure.

Protect It from Moisture

Moisture is another reason to keep saffron in a properly closed container. Avoid storing it somewhere exposed to steam or humidity, such as directly above a cooker or beside a kettle.

When handling saffron, use clean, dry utensils or dry hands. Keeping moisture away from the remaining threads helps maintain suitable storage conditions.

Use an Airtight Container

Once opened, saffron is best kept in a well-sealed container. A small glass jar or another food-safe container with a secure lid can help limit exposure to air and moisture.

Because saffron takes up very little space, choose a container appropriate to the quantity you have rather than an unnecessarily large one.

Store It Somewhere Cool and Stable

Saffron does not need to take up valuable refrigerator space. A cool, dry cupboard away from direct heat and sunlight is generally a practical place to keep it.

Avoid locations where temperature and humidity change frequently. The aim is simply to give the saffron a dry, dark and relatively stable environment between uses.

Good Storage Starts with Good Saffron

Proper storage helps protect saffron after you buy it, but the condition of the product when it reaches you matters too. Origin, harvesting, drying, packaging and handling all contribute to the journey before saffron reaches your cupboard.

At Klasyo, our focus is on connecting Afghan saffron from trusted partners in Herat with customers in the UK and international markets, while keeping its origin clear.

As we expand the Klasyo Journal, we’ll share more practical guides on preparing, using and understanding saffron.
